Titanium Bikes with Pinion, Rohloff & Gates

Pinion, Rohloff and Gates solve different tasks. At HILITE, the choice starts with the route, luggage, desired gear range, wheel and tyre format, service expectations and the rider's position. The frame and drivetrain are then planned as one system.

Pinion, Rohloff or Gates: a concise overview

Pinion gearbox

The enclosed gearbox sits centrally at the bottom bracket. This keeps the gear system protected and places its mass near the centre of the bike. Depending on the model, Pinion offers a broad range of gears for gravel, touring, bikepacking and mountain bikes.

Rohloff SPEEDHUB

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 combines 14 evenly spaced gears in the rear hub. Rohloff specifies a 526% total range and 13.6% steps between gears. It is a proven choice for everyday riding, touring and long-distance bikes.

Gates Carbon Drive

A Gates belt can replace the chain on a compatible frame and drivetrain. It runs without regular lubrication and is quiet and clean in use. Correct frame design, belt line and tension are essential, which is why HILITE plans these details with the complete bicycle.

Which system fits which use?

  • Gravel and bikepacking: Pinion places the gearbox centrally and works well with wide tyres and luggage. Rohloff is a strong option when a rear-hub system and established touring service are preferred.
  • Touring and everyday use: Pinion and Rohloff both offer enclosed gears. The decision depends on wheel service, weight distribution, shifting preference and the required gear range.
  • Mountain bike: Pinion removes the rear derailleur from exposed terrain and centralises the gearbox. Tyre clearance, suspension concept and intended trails remain decisive.
  • Low-maintenance drivetrain: Gates can be combined with suitable Pinion and Rohloff configurations. It reduces routine drivetrain care, while correct setup remains important.

How HILITE specifies a titanium bike

  1. Clarify terrain, distance, luggage and total system weight.
  2. Define riding position, body measurements and frame geometry.
  3. Select the useful gear range, shift system and braking setup.
  4. Coordinate wheels, tyres, belt or chain and service requirements.
  5. Build the titanium frame and complete bike as one coherent system.
