The First Mahle X20 System SmartBike Tandem in the world
The world's first tandem with the Mahle X20 Smartbike System has been built. The customer wanted a lightweight tandem with sufficient torque for occasional climbs. The decision to use the Mahle X20 System was due to its low total weight of 3.2 kg and low resistance when the drive is not engaged. This allows the tandem to be ridden like a regular tandem on flat terrain. Since the stoker can contribute little to no power due to health reasons, assistance on climbs is necessary. After nearly 1000 km, the customer confirmed that the tandem moves well without the motor engaged. The tandem is equipped with 50 mm tires and 27.5-inch rims, which provide a lower, more stable frame and increased comfort. The lighting (Schmidt E-Bike Lighting Edelux DC 170) is controlled directly via the Mahle system and does not require an additional hub dynamo. The X20 System impresses with its seamless integration of components such as the battery and shift cable and was combined with thru-axle and Boost axle, which is advantageous for a tandem. The frame was custom-built, and a specially developed tandem carbon fork was successfully tested. The drivetrain consists of a SRAM GX AXS eTap single-speed group, which is considered ideal for a tandem. The final weight of the tandem, including pedals, is only 21 kg. The customer is wished many enjoyable tours with this fast bike.
